Frequently Asked Questions

What type of training will I receive?

The Camps' administration makes every effort to prepare our staff as well as possible for the excitement and challenge of counseling children in its many forms.  We request all staff arrive at least 10 days prior to our campers so that we may train you on cabin scenarios, guidance, skill education, and much more.  We also provide trainings for such certifications as life guarding, archery, ropes course and CPR/first aid.  We view training as a continual process that takes place throughout the summer and encourage our staff to learn from all experiences.

How do I get to the camp and can I come and see it during the year?

Someone would be more than glad to give you a tour of camp if you would call and make an appointment. Please keep in mind that our camps are completely shut down and boarded up during the off-season, so the facilities and grounds will look entirely different than in the summer. We are located in Goshen, Massachusetts. Look it up on a map. We do not pay for transportation to camp but we do consider this when devising your salary.

What amount of time off will I receive?

Each staff member is guaranteed one day per two week session and a long weekend between sessions.  Each day you will receive at least 2 hours off. Additional time off may  be granted as determined by the directors.

When will I be paid?

Staff will be paid at least three times during the summer, by check, and can cash at the local bank if you wish.

How would I fit in as a new staff member?

During staff training week, our camp leaders build in a tremendous amount of time for you to get to know other staff.  Mixers,  training, and small groups facilitate the "new to camp" experience.  You will not be alone in this adventure either; we have a large number of new camp staff every year who make the leap into camp counseling.

Where do staff come from?

We pull most of our counselors from colleges and universities across the country and around the world.  Junior Counselors are typically graduates of our counselor-In-Training program.

What does your daily schedule look like?

Check out our Typical Day page. Each day is flexible based on the weather, the campers and the program.

Please carefully consider if you can live up to these expectations before applying for a position with Camp Howe.
